Two languages (or more) at the same time

Writer: You First! IdiomasYou First! Idiomas

We've had many students asking us: can I learn two languages at the same time? Do I need to finish one to start a new one? Wouldn't that be more confusing?

Well, we understand that it seems almost impossible, but it's not!

Today I'm going to tell you how we help our students learn two languages at the same time and be able to speak them fluently.

The brain has the ability to change at will. Many people believe in the old idea that we can only learn something new when we are children. However, new studies show that the brain never loses its ability to improve. Often, the interfering factors are emotional, but we'll talk about that in another post. When we are children, learning our native language is easier for several reasons: we have nothing more important, the brain is much more active and there is no fear of making mistakes. At this stage, we could learn more than one language without any problems and very easily.

The YFI methodology takes these factors into consideration and modifies neuronal function to learn the second language. Our brain is such a perfect machine that, understanding the logic of one language, it will use the same process in the second, third, fourth language and so on, as many times as you want.

There will be a difference in fluency levels, but this depends on daily exposure and practice. Furthermore, being multilingual will always be easier in passive activities, such as reading or listening, than in activities that require sentence production, such as writing and speaking.

However, since at YFI we work with specific goals for each student, if their goal is professional, they will probably know how to speak better about their work than they do when ordering in a restaurant or taking a taxi, but it is only a matter of mentioning to the coach that, for example, they will soon be going on a trip and will use the sessions to learn or review this vocabulary. So, we can guarantee that it is possible to learn two languages at the same time and that it will also be as easy or difficult as what you believe.

In addition, we do not have differences in the cost of the sessions between one language and another. Much of our content is in 3 languages (English, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese) and we plan to add another language in the near future.

Would you like to learn more than one language? Have you tried?
